تشبيك الكمبيوترات، يمكن أن يكون المصطلح عبارة (gateway) مربكا
لأنه:
يستعمل للإشارة الى أجهزة متشابهة نظريا لكن مختلفة جدا
في استخداماتها.

In computer networking the term gateway can be confusing because it’s:
used to refer to
devices that are similar in theory but fundamentally different in application.

- المصطلح
موجه (router)
يشير دائما إلى:
جهاز أو برنامج يوصل شبكتين عند طبقة الشبكة للطراز OSI، مما يشكل شبكة بينية.

The term router always refers to:
a hardware or
software device that connects two networks at the network layer of the OSI
model, forming an internetwork.

- لكن في
مصطلحات TCP/IP:
تسمى الموجهات في أغلب الأحيان عبارات.

In TCP/IP terminology:
however, routers
are often called gateways.

- مثلا:
عندما تضبط تكوين عميل TCP/IP، ستزود عنوان عبارة افتراضية، وهي في الواقع موجه على الشبكة
المحلية التي يستعملها الكمبيوتر للوصول إلى الشبكات الأخرى.

when you
configure a TCP/IP client, you supply the address of a default gateway, which
is actually a router on the local network that the system uses to access other
networks.

العبارة هي:
جهاز يمكن كمبتورين من الاتصال ببعضهما، رغم أنهما
يشغلان بروتوكولات مختلفة في احدى طبقات الطراز OSI.

enables two computers to communicate, even though they are running different
protocols at some layer of the OSI model.

- يمكن تسمية
الموجه عبارة لأنه:
يمكن الكمبيوترات التي تشغل بروتوكولات مختلفة لطبقة
وصلة البيانات من الاتصال ببعضها.

A router can be called a gateway because:
it enables computers
running different data-link layer protocols to communicate.

- لكن هناك
أيضا عبارات:
تعمل عند طبقة البرامج، مما يزود واجهة بين برنامجين أو
نظامي تشغيل.

However, there are also gateways:
that operate at
the application layer, providing an interface between two programs or operating
systems.

- مثلا:
Gateway Service for NetWare (خدمة
العبارة لنتوير) المشمولة في ويندوز 2000 سيرفر تمكن عملاء ويندوز من الوصول إلى
ملقمات نتوير المرتكزة على IPX من دون الاضطرار إلى تشغيل عميل لنتوير أو البروتوكولات IPX نفسها.

For example:
the Gateway
Service for NetWare included in Windows 2000 Server enables Windows clients to
access IPX-based NetWare servers without having to run a NetWare client or the
IPX protocols themselves.
